Chocolate Daisy Flower? Really?

Writer's picture: sygdesignssygdesigns

Can you believe that this interesting yellow and red flower is called a Chocolate Daisy Flower? I was shocked when I learned the name of it too. I later found out that it gets its name from a chocolate odor that you can smell when plucking the rays off the flower head. Additionally, it is said that a field of these flowers can produce a scent of chocolate when they bloom.

But that is not what caught my eye when I went out taking photos on the day that I discovered this truly interesting and beautiful flower. So, what is it about these flowers that caught my attention. Firstly, the yellow petals contrasting with the red center of the flowers in bloom caught my eye. Then my eye shifted to the interesting green button-like discs next to those yellow flowers. My mind took a moment to process that yes indeed these were part of the same plant and thereby the same flow

A closer look at the plant allowed me to see flowers in different degrees of bloom. Each stage looked unique and interesting. As the structure of these flowers was both different and intriguing, I did my best to capture that in my images.

When I got back home, I downloaded the images and was even more captivated by the differences in the stages of these flowers. I also developed a deep curiosity as to the name of these unique flowers. As you already know, this is a Chocolate Daisy flower. But it also has many other names including: Berlandiera lyrate, Lyreleaf greeneyes, Green-eyed Lyre Leaf, and chocolate flower. No matter what you choose to call it, it is a beautifully unique looking flower even when you can’t smell the chocolate sent. Though next time I come across if I will sniff it to see if I can detect the chocolate scent.
